Apply for a geveltuin/pavement garden

Roses geveltuin Amsterdam Oost Watergraafsmeer

Below are links leading to application forms (aanvraagformulier), to help you apply for a geveltuin/pavement garden in Amsterdam. The forms are all in Dutch and should be either completed online or handed into your local stadsdeel kantoor (council offices).

By pavement garden I mean those small or large strips of pavement where the council come along, remove the paving slabs, dig a pit, edge it neatly and encharge someone with the role of caring for plants in it. Geveltuinen may be just the size of paving slab or as long as an apartment block. They are generally very narrow strips, perhaps 45cm deep but they are always big enough to grow some useful herbs within.

I’ve taken this list of Amsterdam areas from Wikipedia and added links to each council’s geveltuin form. Some are general forms, some are area specific. Some ask for a simple drawing of the location, others don’t. If you can’t find anyone to help you with the Dutch forms then go into your local council office and ask at reception if anyone there can assist you.

I can’t find any information for Westpoort, so if you live or work there, I suggest you simply ask at the council office.

Council construction of a geveltuin should be cost free, although some areas have a number restriction each year. Some run incentives at times to encourage more people to get a geveltuin, they may fill it with soil and give you a set of plants to use. Most don’t. Mine (in Oost) was constructed just a week after my request but had only sand in it so I needed a few trips to Intratuin to purchase soil.
